DR. DAVID J. RHODES

David is a Yorkshire man by profession, and, having pursued a rather peripatetic existence, is now Lecturer in Musicology at Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland.. He studied music at Queen's university, Belfast obtaining his B mus, PhD, LRSM, LTCL, LGSM & Music Teachers' diploma. David studied conducting with George Hurst and Frantisek Vaginar and has conducted various orchestras, choirs and societies including opera.

He founded the Belfast Baroque consort and conducted it for five years before leaving Belfast for his present post. He is a bassoon player and specialises in editing and (where necessary) arranging music from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries for the benefit of today's musicians. Most of this music is published for the first time or has been out of print since the composer's death. Some has been available only in over-edited or inaccurate nineteenth century editions. He no longer performs as much as he would like to (music editing is very time consuming) but does find time to adjudicate at music festivals

and band competitions.

David's PhD research was closely connected with music editing (the complete works of Franz Anton Pfeiffer, whose Bassoon Sonatas are available from Piper) and he has continued this activity as part of his post doctoral research exploring various previously untapped avenues of late eighteenth century music such as multi-timpani genre and concerto string ripieno performance practice. Recent ventures include editions of the complete flute music of James Hook (6 Volumes) plus four volumes of Hook's vocal music (available from Piper) and the unearthing of a substantial amount of somewhat anachronistic late eighteenth century music for the viola da gamga. He also produces critical editions of 18th century music for Sarastro Music (London), Asclepius Editions (West Malvern) and Anglo-American Music Publishers/Worldwide Music (Florida, U.S.A.

As a musicologist, David has given papers at various international conferences, including ones on F.A. Pfeiffer at R.N.C.M. in Manchester, Carl Stamitz at Rostock University, and on the Classical-era European symphonic use of divided violas at theRosengarten Conference Centre at Mannheim in addition to papers on a variety of18th century topics at a number of Royal Musical Association weekend conferences in Ireland.

In his leisure time David collects modern Irish art, brews wine, collects stamps and likes to travel. He likes to listen to Mozart, Wagner, Richard Strauss and Rachmaninov.
